Kuldiga is possibly the most picturesque town in Latvia; the former capital of the Duchy of Courland and home to Europe’s widest (though definitely not the highest) waterfall. While difficult to get to, it is worth making the journey to spend some time there, especially if you are already riding in Kurzeme (west Latvia).
There are a few ways to ride to Kuldiga from Riga, however the most direct and popular goes through Jurmala and Tukums. This route is approximately 160 km in total, best split over 2 or 3 days. Those with less time should consider catching the train directly from Riga to Tukums then riding from there, making the trip only around 90 km.
Along the route are many of Latvia’s beautiful sights, the long sandy beaches of Jurmala and its impressive collection of architecture, the Kemeri National Park and swamp, the old towns of Tukums and Kandava and the Abava valley. There are plenty of guesthouses along the way that can provide accommodation for weary riders.
Trekking bikes can be hired from our shop in Riga, complete with helmet, panniers and a repair kit, and of course we will provide maps and advice for your trip. Below are some photos taken on a recent ride from Riga to Kuldiga.
The first of May is a public holiday in Latvia, as people take time off for International Workers Day. However, for us at Riga Bike Tours and Rent, this is a day of work as we kick-off our Daily Bike Tour season. As the weather gets nicer, we run two tours every day until the end of September. If you are visiting Riga this summer, then joining our Daily Bike Tour is the perfect way to discover the city.
Ķemeri National Park is a large area to the west of Jurmala. A low lying region, it has a few large lakes in swampy surroundings. Beautiful and perfect for bird-watching, the large area of Kemeri is best explored by bike from Riga.
There are a number of long-distance bike routes in Latvia. Three Eurovelo routes cross the country, Eurovelo 10, 11 and 13 and there are more routes that have been developed locally. However the most popular route to ride is the Eurovelo 10, which follows the Latvian coast from Lithuania to Estonia. Last year I rode the newly marked section from Riga through Limbaži to Salacgriva, and back along the newly created coastal path. Below are some pictures and some advice on riding in Latvia. Riga Bike Tours has shut down for the winter, following our last tour of the year on the 13th of December, quite possibly the latest date we have ever run a bicycle tour in Riga! Although the winter is still quite mild, the roads are icy and only the bike couriers are brave or crazy enough to ride on them. Continue reading

Bicycle Routes in Riga are, to say the least, minimal. This causes us here at Riga Bike Tours and Rent to get very excited when there is the slightest hint of development in Riga’s cycling infrastructure. This year there has been a couple of exciting developments. One of those is the proposed bike path from Old Riga to Kengerags and Salaspils.
