A 7 day cycling tour of the Latgale region of Latvia.
For those who love to explore and get off the beaten track; this is the perfect tour for you. The Latgale region in Latvia’s south-east is one of the least visited parts of the country, but one of the most interesting. Thousands of pristine lakes, wooden churches and tiny villages dot the landscape. This 7 day tour starts and finishes in Daugavpils, Latvia’s second biggest city, and includes 6 days riding and one day canoeing on the ‘Daugavas Loki’ national park.
Latgale, one of the four regions of Latvia, has developed at a different pace to the rest of the country. With strong Polish and Russian influence and with with its own unique dialect of the Latvian language ‘Latgalian’, it is truly the most unique region of the country. It is also the least explored, both by tourists and locals alike, riding through this region feels like stepping back in time. The region is bursting with history and natural beauty and we have designed a tour that will give the rider a great experience of this forgotten corner of Europe.
The 7 day tour includes 6 nights in guest house accommodation and one day canoeing on the Daugava river, through the beautiful Dauvaga’s Meanders section. Highlights include the Daugavpils fortress and Mark Rothko centre, Aglona Cathedral and pilgrimage site, Old Believers villages and countless lakes and churches. Riding is on quiet asphalt and dirt back roads passing through small villages and surrounded by pristine nature.
