Enjoy the sights of the Historical Old Town of Riga – join a relaxed cycling tour through the medieval streets of the city.
Riga Old Town, in Latvian known as “Vecrīga”, is the original historical heart of the city. Riga was established in the early 13th century during the Northern crusades against the local paganic tribes and soon attracted merchants and traders from all across Europe. Later it formed part the of Hanseatic League, which led to the growth of Riga as a wealthy trading city.
A Bicycle Tour through the Riga Old Town offers an opportunity to see the legacy of the many different cultures that have left their mark in Riga over the last eight centuries.
Throughout the periods as part of ‘Livonia’, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Swedish and Russian Empires, Riga was a cosmopolitan city and an important link between East and West. Later periods as the capital of independent and then soviet Latvia, as well as two world wars, left their mark on Riga. The city you see today became what it is through the influence and presence of the various cultures and powers over the centuries.
